Scar Treatment

Scars are one of the reasons why people may feel self-conscious about their appearance, affecting their confidence. The goal of treating scars caused by accidents, burns, or surgical operations is to minimize their visibility as much as possible. Scar treatment depends on various factors such as how the scar formed, its duration, post-injury treatment, the type of injury, and the individual's body's response to injury. Scar treatment protocols vary depending on these factors, and the timing of treatment is planned according to the scar and the patient's condition. While treatment may begin immediately for certain types of scars, for others, approximately 6 months may be needed for the wound to mature before treatment can commence. This decision should be made by your doctor.

How should scars be treated?

First and foremost, appropriate treatment should be applied to the wound to ensure proper healing from the moment it occurs. Treatment methods vary depending on the causes of the wound. For example, if the wound/cut area requires surgical intervention, it should be appropriately closed with stitches, or if there is a burn, treatment should be initiated accordingly. When appropriate treatment is applied, and infection is prevented, the likelihood of leaving a scar while the wound heals can be reduced. After treatment, the patient should follow their doctor's program for wound care and check-ups. Topical treatments that accelerate healing or reduce scar formation are used under medical supervision during wound healing. Sun protection during wound healing is also important to reduce scar formation.

Despite taking all precautions, some individuals may experience excessive collagen production while wounds heal. This is usually genetic and results in keloids or hypertrophic scars, which manifest as swelling in scar tissue. Tight bandages, corticosteroid injections into the lesion, cream treatments, cryotherapy, and laser treatments are preferred for the treatment of these swellings.

Scar Treatment with Carbon Dioxide Laser

Laser treatment is the most potent method for scar treatment. With realistic patient expectations, excellent results can be achieved with laser treatment for suitable scars. A single laser treatment session may not be sufficient; the number of sessions and intervals between sessions will be determined by your doctor based on the type of scar.
