Cheekbone (Zygoma) Filling

With age, there's a natural depletion in facial bone density, along with sagging and shrinking of fat pads, subcutaneous tissues, and muscles, causing the upper cheek area, known as the zygomatic region, to gradually flatten. This flattening contributes to facial sagging and can make a person appear older and more fatigued than they are.

The zygomatic bones are located on both sides of our face, in the upper part of the cheeks. In an aesthetically pleasing face, the zygomatic bones are slightly prominent and defined. Having prominent cheekbones is crucial for the face to have a V-shaped appearance, which signifies a younger and more dynamic look. Additionally, filler in this area creates a tenting effect, lifting the sagging cheek areas upward. Lifting the face upward also helps correct the subtle jawline that develops with age.

Who Can Get Zygomatic Filler?

Zygomatic filler is typically administered to individuals whose facial features lack prominence in the cheekbone area or who have experienced flattening and sinking of the zygomatic bone with age. Fuller cheekbones give a youthful and dynamic appearance, while hollowed cheeks can create a tired and aged look. Zygomatic filler is suitable for both men and women over the age of 18 who do not have any health issues that would prevent them from undergoing the procedure.

How Is Zygomatic Filler Done?

Highly lifting hyaluronic acid fillers or mineral fillers are preferred for zygomatic filler. Before the procedure, the application area is numbed with local anesthetic creams. The procedure is carried out using a needle injection or a blunt-tipped cannula, similar to other filler procedures.

Pain or discomfort is generally minimal during the procedure. After about 15 minutes, the patient can return to their daily activities.

When Can the Effects of Zygomatic Filler Be Noticed?

The effects of zygomatic filler are noticeable immediately after the procedure, with enhanced prominence of the cheekbones. Contrary to popular belief, fillers in this area do not create an unnatural or enlarged appearance. The goal is to restore lost volume due to aging or to enhance underdeveloped facial features. When administered by an expert doctor in the correct doses, filler treatments yield highly satisfactory results.

What Are the Possible Side Effects After Zygomatic Filler?

Similar to other filler procedures, mild redness or bruising may occur on the skin after the procedure. These side effects are temporary and typically resolve on their own without causing any significant discomfort.

How Long Does Zygomatic Filler Last?

The longevity of fillers used in zygomatic filler varies depending on the filler material used and the individual's structural characteristics, but it typically lasts for about 1 year on average. There's no harm in repeating the procedure, and individuals can choose to have the filler replenished after this period if desired.

How Much Filler Is Used in Zygomatic Filler?

The amount of filler used depends entirely on individual needs. However, when high-capacity fillers with water retention and lifting properties are used, more effective results can be achieved with less filler.

Precautions Before Zygomatic Filler Procedure:

- Discontinue blood thinners such as aspirin a week before the procedure and avoid supplements that increase bleeding risk, such as vitamin E and green tea.
- Stop taking all painkillers and abstain from alcohol consumption two days before.
- If there is a skin infection such as herpes in the application area or its surroundings, it must be treated before the procedure.
- Ideally, arrive for the appointment without makeup and ensure the face is clean.

Post-Zygomatic Filler Care:

- Avoid massaging or rubbing the treated area.
- For three days after the procedure, avoid exposure to heat, such as hot baths, steam rooms, saunas, sunbeds, or direct sunlight, especially if there's swelling or bruising.
- Avoid blood-thinning medications and foods for the first few days after the procedure.
- Refrain from consuming alcohol on the same day as the procedure.
- Avoid heavy exercise for about a day after the procedure.
- Do not expose the treated area to water or apply any products or makeup on the same day as the procedure due to the risk of infection.
- Avoid swimming pools for two days due to the risk of infection.
- Do not lie face down for four hours after the procedure.
- Refrain from any facial treatments on the same day as the procedure. If a facial treatment is desired, it should be done either before the filler procedure or at least a week after.
